A Call to Action in Uncertain Times

This year has been hard. Really hard. Between the natural disasters that rocked Nashville in the spring and now the ongoing COVID19 pandemic, we’re all facing a great deal of uncertainty, instability, and uneasiness.

The mental health toll that these events have taken on us can’t be measured. I know I’ve struggled with that uncertainty. Sleepless nights, overthinking, finding it hard to relax, even physical symptoms like shakiness and that tight feeling in your chest that doesn’t seem to go away. Maybe that’s you too.

For many, the gym is a place of sanity and peace. You build your body to be more resilient against life’s inevitable stress. You make friendships in this time of isolation. You can shut your phone off for a little while and do something just for you, something that no life circumstances can take away.

Healthy body, healthy mind. You can’t put a price on that.

When you aren’t quite feeling like yourself and the weight of the world seems unbearable, get up and move. Just walking around the house or around the block will help. Your brain responds positively to movement, releasing feel-good chemicals called endorphins that boost your mood and get you motivated. It may feel impossible at first, but start small. Do 5 minutes today. 10 minutes tomorrow. Build momentum and soon you’ll be surprised at how much better you feel.

When so much in the world feels like it’s spiraling out of control, you’ll find strength in controlling what you can. You don’t have to let circumstances decide whether or not you’re going to be successful. Things may not be ideal, but they never are.

Winners and losers are determined by tenacity and adaptability.
